Lord of the summer,
F
ather of flower, field, and fruit,
smile on us in these earnest days
lift up our hearts, O God, to the things worthwhile--
sunshine and night, the dripping rain, the song of birds,
books and music, and the voices of our friends.
Lift up our hearts to these this night and grant us thy peace.
Amen.

Thank You, Volunteers!

Ongoing Service Opportunities
One of the most meaningful ways to do service is to develop relationships with one organization. Students get to know the people they are working with, develop skills, become confident & independent, and can grow a life-long relationship with an organization or cause. For that reason, DSHA highly encourages service internships or ongoing service.  Most organizations are looking for regular volunteers so students can reach out independently to a place they are interested in serving.  Additionally, DSHA has developed relationships with many organizations that welcome DSHA students as service interns. A list can be picked up near the service board outside campus ministry (updated) and one was emailed to your daughter in January. Contact Stephanie Monson (monsons@dsha.k12.wi.us) with questions or for help.

Homework is not to be assigned during Vocare; the focused mission-centered work of Vocare is meant to be the priority and the student service experience during this time is designed to be allencompassing. Students in AP courses may be allowed to continue reading minimal course material so as not to create an undue burden for themselves upon return, but even AP teachers are required to scale back expectations of students during the Vocare service immersion experience.

Absence policy: Normal hours are 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. unless site has specified otherwise. If a student is sick when they are scheduled to be at her site, the student must contact both the service site and the attendance line at DSHA to inform them of her absence. The student will be required to make up all missed hours by February 28, 2017.

Snow policy: If DSHA closes due to severe weather, students should not report to her service site; however, she must contact her service site to inform them.

Attire: School Placement- Dress in uniform with leggings on the first day. The site will inform your daughter if other dress is acceptable. Non-school Placement - Dress in business casual attire (i.e. dress pants, khakis, nice shirts, etc.) No jeans, sweats, shorts, leggings, or t-shirts.

No cell phones: Cell phones may not be used or visible during work hours.

Photos: Student should ask her service site if she can take pictures 1) for use through DSHA and 2) for personal use. Students are asked to not post pictures from Vocare on thier personal social media accounts without express permission from thier site supervisor. Catholic Schools Week
This year’s Catholic School’s week was a huge success.

Monday’s Vocare Welcome Back assembly brought tears to many eyes as our seniors shared their service experiences and received medals to forever commemorate their two weeks of Vocare.

On Tuesday, we made 1,500 pancakes (at least!) to celebrate DSHA as an amazing Catholic School! Many saintly faces appeared, from Saint Theresa to Saint Patrick for the spirit day!

On Wednesday, we showed our gratitude to our grade school teachers by creating a myriad of beautiful thank you notes.

Thursday’s Multicultural production was incredible and students dressed accordingly as their favorite country.

Mass with Fr. John Burns  on Friday recognized a very important group of people, dedicated to serving DSHA.  During mass, we congratulated fourteen
teachers and staff members for their five, ten, fifteen and even thirty-five years of dedication to DSHA.  Thank you to all parents who joined us for
lunch, rosary and mass.  We were happy to include you as an important part of DSHA as a Catholic school!

developed truly meaningful relationships with those they served. The Vocare seniors were welcomed back to school in a beautiful prayer service where they
received a special blessing from the Sisters of the Divine Savior and received their Vocare commemorative medal, a candle and a prayer memento created by our underclasswomen.

Freshman Service Day
On Friday, November 7, 174 freshmen, 23 parent chaperones, 8 faculty members and 16 senior student leaders went into the community to serve others as part of Freshman Service Day. The day began and ended with prayer and reflection.  Following is just one of many e-mails that we received from the agencies where our students served: “Wow! Helping Hands and Happy Hearts... your busy hands and beautiful smiles made happy hearts today at Luther Manor. From engaging with our Adult Day Center participants, beading and crafting, to participating with our Roman Catholic older adults by escorting them to and from Mass, to finally sharing your remarkable time and talents with many older adults... Thank you so much for your time, your energy and enthusiasm, and your witness in His Name!”

Eucharistic Adoration
On November 12, Fr. John Burns led us in a wonderful and holy tradition of the Catholic Church, Eucharistic Adoration.  Fr. John reminded us that all we need to do is keep our eyes on Jesus and trust Him.  In this holy hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, many girls attended over their lunch period to come and pray as a community before the Lord.

John Burns will take place on November 12 in the SDS Chapel.  Eucharistic Adoration is a time of quiet prayer and reflection in order to become closer to God through prayer and conversation with God. Alumnae Weekend
This year’s Alumnae weekend featured three liturgies where we gathered to pray as a DSHA family.  On Friday, October 3, we had the pleasure of meeting our 2014 Alumnae of the Year: Ms. Jane Foley, S. Shelia Novak, S. Shawnee Daniels-Sykes and Gina Stilp. During this assembly, these four inspirational women shared deep insight about their lives after graduating from DSHA, relaying stories of their service to the poor and vulnerable.  Following the assembly, we joined in prayer at our weekly Faith Friday Mass.  On Saturday, October 4, we remembered the lives of young alumnae who have gone before us at this year’s Alumnae Memorial Mass. Our annual Jubilee Mass and Brunch on Sunday, October 5 drew this amazing weekend to a close. Through prayer and song, we celebrated the classes of DS and HA 1964, with Fr. Scott Jones, SDS presiding.

Freshman Retreat
On October 19, we will begin our Freshman Retreat. At 8 p.m., Fr. Dennis will say Mass for us in The Quad. This is a wonderful experience of prayer and bonding for the class of 2018. Mass at DSHA allows Freshmen to ‘Take Flight’ in their faith and pray in a special way.

Mother Daughter Mass
Mother Daughter Liturgy & Luncheon takes place at the Pfister Hotel on Sunday, November 2 at 10 a.m.  A collection will be taken to benefit the Penfield’s Children Center, which is our Advent Project this year.

Collection Day – October 14, 2014
DSHA students brought in 470 non-perishable food items for St. Anthony’s Food Pantry on Collection Day – October 14.  In a special collection, they also were able to give 13 iPods to St. Anne’s Home for the Elderly for their new Music and Memory Program.

Collections Team Needs Plastic Bags
If you have plastic grocery/pharmacy/department store bags that you do not need, consider donating them to Campus Ministry’s Collection Program.  The bags are used to package up donations for our not-for-profit agencies and can be deposited in the cans outside Campus Ministry Thank you!

Alumnae Weekend
This year's alumnae week celebrated the accomplishments of four DSHA women: Jane Foley, Sister Shawnee Daniels-Sykes, SSND, Sister Shelia Novak, SDS, and Gina Stilp.  In our assembly on Friday, October 3, the DSHA community met these faithful women to learn more about how each has devoted her life to the service of the poor and
vulnerable in the world. Their vocations include serving victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, healthcare advocacy, human trafficking and inner-city housing issues.

This year's Alumnae Weekend boasted two wonderful liturgies to remember all past and present women of DSHA.  On Saturday, October 4, we celebrated a memorial Mass in remembrance of Shari Dorresteijn, DSHA '99, who passed away last spring. The following morning, our Jubilee Mass honored women who graduated from Divine Savior and Holy Angels High Schools in 1964.

Homecoming Mass
On September 26th, Fr. John Burns celebrated our Homecoming Mass with us to draw our Spirit Week and Dash-A-Thon to a close before the Homecoming Dance.  Packed with prayer, spirit and beautiful music, this liturgy offered thanks for a great week and hopeful prayers for what was a wonderful Homecoming weekend.

Adoration
On November 12, during both Resource Times (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), Fr. John Burns will return to DSHA to preside an hour of Eucharist Adoration for the entire DSHA community. Adoration will be in the chapel, and all are invited to spend any amount of time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Keep a look out for more information as this prayerful opportunity comes closer!

Freshman Service Day Parent Driver & Chaperones – Thank You!
Thank you to so many freshman parents who volunteered to chaperone/drive for Freshman Service Day on November 7. Those of you who responded to this request should have received an e-mail from Campus Ministry confirming your assistance  (If you did not receive confirmation, please e-mail Linda Bardele)  We could still use some additional volunteers. If you can commit to helping us for this worthwhile day from 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., please e-mail Linda by September 26. Thank you!

Fr. Jordan Awareness Week
This past week celebrated the memory of the Founder of the Salvatorians, Fr. Francis Jordan.  Students and staff alike filled the prayer intention basket with invocations to be offered through the intercession of Fr. Jordan. In the spirit of Fr. Jordan’s dedication to service, students devoted time during their lunch hour to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need. In total, we delivered 467 and ½ sandwiches to the Gathering meal program on the south side of Milwaukee. The following day, Sr. Mary Lee Grady, SDS gave an inspiring and educational talk on Fr. Jordan’s mission and vision in founding our sponsoring order.  We are very grateful to everyone who attended, and also to Sr. Mary Lee who shared her own story of vocational calling to the Salvatorians.

Attention Freshmen Parents
This year’s Freshman Service Day is Friday, November 7. On this day, your daughter will spend time in prayer, service and reflection.  It is a wonderful opportunity for her to serve others and learn about the many needs within the greater Milwaukee community. All freshmen are expected to attend; it is a graduation requirement. In order for the day to be successful, we need parent volunteers to help chaperone. Your commitment would be from 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.  If you can help, please contact Linda Bardele, Campus Ministry, at bardelel@dsha.k12.wi.us by Monday, September 22. Thank you for your help!

Food Collection
Our first food collection for this school year was Friday, September 5. Thank you for your family’s generosity!  We will have two more food collections this month: Monday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 24 (changed from September 25.)  Please be sure that your daughter brings one or more non-perishable food items on all of our collection days.  If she does so, she can be out-of-uniform that day!

Fr. Jordan Awareness Week
This week, we celebrate the life and teachings of the founder of the Salvatorians, Fr. Francis Jordan. This week is full of prayer intentions for his intercession.

On Tuesday, your daughters will add prayer intentions to a basket by the cross in the Theology wing. They can write prayer requests for the intercession of Fr. Jordan. These prayers will be offered in a special way during Mass on Friday.

On Wednesday, we will be making sandwiches in The Quad during first resource time, in honor of Fr. Jordan’s dedication to a life of service to those who are poor and vulnerable.  Each class will be in charge of bringing an item:  Freshmen- Peanut Butter, Sophomores- Bread, Juniors-Jelly, Seniors-baggies. Our sandwiches will be delivered to “The Gathering” at their south side location on Layton Blvd.

On Thursday, during early resource in the SDS chapel, Sr. Mary Lee Grady will reflect on the mission of the Salvatorians, as well as her own call to her vocation.

Friday, September 12 is our All School Foundation Day Mass, which draws Fr. Jordan Awareness Week to a close. Celebrating his dedication to the Savior and His cross, we will celebrate the Feast of the Exultation of the Cross on this day.  We will also be introducing our new “Pray it Forward” cards for the year.

New Assistant Director of Campus Ministry
Hello!  My name is Ms. Catherine Hackbarth, and I am the new Assistant Director of Campus Ministry. I went to Notre Dame for undergraduate studies in Violin Performance and English with a minor in Theology, and then went on to my masters in Sacred Music. While I was at Notre Dame I was Assistant Rector at Pasquerilla East Hall. I look forward to working with your daughters through the many prayer opportunities offered at DSHA. Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns: HackbarthC@dsha.k12.wi.us.

Freshman Fun Day
To conclude Freshman Fun Day we were able to celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary with the class of 2018.  Mass was a wonderful, prayerful way to welcome DSHA’s newest Dashers. Fr. Dennis Thiessen presided and blessed each and every prayer book for the each member of the freshman class.

Recent Liturgies
This past week, we celebrated our All-School Opening Mass on Friday, August 22. We look forward to many more Masses as we “Build on our Faith” this year.

Campus Ministry Leaders Retreat
Please pray for our student leaders on retreat today as they prayerfully plan a wonderful year for the DSHA community. Retreat started yesterday with Mass in the Hansen theatre with Fr. Philip Bogacki and a family potluck.

Faith Fridays
Faith Fridays begin on August 29 at 11:15 a.m.  Allparents are welcome to join us!  We celebrate the liturgy in the SDS Chapel. We celebrate daily Mass using the daily readings, and this liturgy also includes music ministry members every week.

Food Collections/Out-of-Uniform Days
Each month, when the 5th, 15th or 25th falls on a school day, students are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items on behalf of St. Anthony’s Food Pantry (located on 9th Street in Milwaukee). If a student brings in food, she is allowed to be out-of-uniform that day.  This school year, our collections will begin on Friday, September 5th.  Any non-perishable food item is greatly appreciated; however, items needed the most are: canned chicken and tuna, canned meals (e.g., soup, beef stew, ravioli, pasta, etc.), oatmeal, cereal, bags/boxes of rice, canned fruit, canned vegetables and canned/dry milk. St. Anthony’s has told us that if not for DSHA, they would not be able to remain open. Thank you for your family’s generosity.
