Department Philosophy & Goals

Maintaining a healthy balance in today’s world requires a great deal of skill, knowledge and practice. Health and physical education are combined to create an integrated wellness curriculum that, we believe, provides high school females with the tools they need to achieve a healthy balance in their busy lives.

We believe that Wellness Education…

  • promotes learning through a variety of movement experiences by means of a sequential educational program.
  • provides a connection between mind and body which is crucial to personal growth and development.
  • develops, teaches, and provides the opportunity for mastery of various movement skills, concepts and principles.
  • establishes the foundation for pursuit and development of health-related physical fitness.
  • develops an understanding and appreciation of lifetime physical activities.
  • enhances cognitive skills such as problem solving, decision-making and creative thinking.
  • promotes self-understanding and acceptance of others.
  • encourages an environment where responsible personal and social behaviors are learned and demonstrated.
  • provides opportunity for enjoyment, self-expression, challenge and social interactions.
  • provides a safe and healthy environment to promote physical and emotional well being.
  • creates an awareness of community resources.
  • creates the awareness of opportunity for the use of technology.
  • allows differentiated instruction for all students with varied cognitive, social, and physical abilities.
  • provides an opportunity to explore physical education vocations, avocations, and the influence of physical activity
    on everyday life.
  • provides an opportunity to explore interdisciplinary connections*.

* Wellness is much more than physical and mental health.  Wellness is a full integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.  It is a complex interaction that leads to quality of life.  In collaboration with the total school community we are able to make connections to all Seven Dimensions of Wellness.   The Seven Dimensions of Wellness are:  social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and physical wellness.  Each of these seven dimensions act and interact in a ways that determine each individuals quality of life.
